16 Easy Thanksgiving Side Dishes for the Perfect Holiday Dinner

Thanksgiving dinner is one of those meals where the sides are every bit as important as the turkey. Give me a plate piled with mashed potatoes, stuffing and all the veggies and I’m happy!

I’ve pulled together 16 Thanksgiving side dishes here, with a good mix of the classics and a few slightly different ideas too. There are plenty of potato recipes (because you can never have too many potatoes), plus stuffing, veggies and a few cheesy, bacon-y options thrown in.

If you’re still figuring out what to put on the table this year, have a scroll through and pick a few to add to your menu. There are some really easy ones in here too, which is always a bonus when you’ve already got a million other things to cook.

  3. Add a layer of biscuit balls to the pan, followed by spoonfuls of cranberry sauce and cubes of brie.

  4. Continue layering biscuit pieces, cranberry sauce, and brie until the pan is filled.

  5. Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in the microwave.

  6. Drizzle the melted butter evenly over the layered ingredients.

Servings: 6

Ingredients:

  • 1.7 lbs Yukon Gold or similar potatoes, thinly sliced (about 0.8 kg)
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream (or half-and-half/milk)
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • 2 tsp dried thyme leaves
  • 1 tsp salt
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and lightly grease a baking dish.

  2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 1 minute, until fragrant. Stir in the flour and cook for 1 to 2 minutes to create a smooth roux.

  3. Gradually whisk in the cream and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until the sauce begins to thicken. Stir in the Parmesan, thyme, salt, and pepper until smooth, adding a little milk if needed to adjust the consistency.

  4. Stand the potato slices upright in the prepared baking dish. Pour the sauce evenly over the potatoes and sprinkle with extra Parmesan if desired.

  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for another 30 minutes, until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden.

  6. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
